mercedes-benz. the best or nothing. nbc 10 breaking news. >> that breaking news is in kent county. right now, crews are on the scene of a building fire. this is happening in dover. the fire has gone to multiple alarms and there are initial reports that a fire engine rolled over going to the scene. we have a crew on the way. we'll be updating this story throughout the morning as we get more information. new from overnight, philadelphia police are investigating a triple shooting in cobb's creek. we're told three people were wounded outside cousin danny's exotic haven on de lancing street. philadelphia police are also investigating a double shooting in feltonville.

two men were shot near the intersection of kensington and sudsley just after midnight. they found a gun at the scene that was registered to one of the victims. so far, no arrests. happening today, convicted philadelphia cop killer abu jamal will give a college graduation speech. during the address, philadelphia police plan to hold a silent protest at the site where officer daniel faulkner was gunned down. a recorded speech will be played today for 20 students at goddard college in vermont. he received a bachelor's degree from the school in 1996 while behind bars. he's serving life in prison for killing officer faulkner in center city in 1981. coming up this morning at 6:00, you'll hear from the officer's widow maureen faulkner and her own message to those college students. in mercer county, the first death related to entero virus

has health officials taking safety precautions. he died september 25th. another child from that school is also sick, but is not believed to have the same type of entero virus. golden blue ribbons lined his neighborhood friday night. authorities claimed it was entero virus d 38 that took his life. it's the first case in our area. another preschooler was tested for entero virus d-68. >> of course it's going to be on everybody's mind. it's only human nature. people are nervous. they're scared. >> the school district says it has added extra staff to disinfect the school. entero virus d-68 has sickened many children.

for realtime updates on enterovirus d-68, visit nbc.com. we have information and health tips. happening today, the freelance nbc news photographer who contracted ebola in liberia will be flown to nebraska for treatment. meantime, thomas duncan, being treated for ebola in texas, has gotten worse and is now in critical condition. the head of the centers for disease control and prevention says about 50 people who had contact with duncan have been located and tested. so far, no one is showing symptoms. when it comes to keeping people infected with ebola out of the united states, health officials say there's no realistic way to do it. >> although we might wish we could seal ourselves off from the world, there are americans who have the right of return there are many other people who have the right to enter into this country, and that we're not going to be able to get to zero risk no matter what we do.

>> meantime, bed sheets, towels, and mattresses have already been removed from the apartment where duncan was staying. eventually, all items will be taken away and destroyed. dozens of penn state students are being monitored for the ebola virus. 80 students traveled to areas near the outbreak and are now spread out all across penn state campuses. experts say the likelihood that those students have the virus, though, is very slim. a massachusetts doctor who was successfully treated for ebola after returning from west africa is now back in the hospital. doctors say it appears he has a respiratory infection and they don't believe it's a recurrence of the virus. he was released from the hospital about a week and a half ago. he will remain in isolation until doctors have confirmed he is not infected with ebola. and ebola has been ruled out as the cause of illness for a man who got sick on a flight to new jersey.

this is a picture taken onboard that plane. the man started throwing up during the flight from brussels to newark. health officials say he had traveled to west africa, but he had shown no evidence of ebola. the pennsylvania state trooper killed at a montgomery shooting range will be remembered today. officials say david kedra was accidentally shot by another trooper. they say it happened during a training exercise on tuesday. kendra was 26 years old. he had been a member of the state police since june of 2012. he was a graduate of temple university and was engaged to be married. a life celebration will be held tonight at 6:00 in northeast philadelphia. a funeral mass is set for tomorrow morning at 11:00 at christ the king church at morrow avenue and chesterfield road. we are learning more about text messages eric freen sent

before he ambushed police in the poke knows. reports are that he wrote "all is good" in a text message to a longtime friend less than five hours before the attack. frein also said he was heading back to delaware. according to police, he lied to relatives and others about working in delaware so he could prepare for the ambush. one trooper was killed and a second was wounded. the search is now in its fourth week. meantime, hunting season is being interrupted as police continue to comb the woods for eric frien. the pennsylvania game commission decided to put a hunting ban in seven townships. one man traveled from north jersey to monroe county for the first day of archery deer season but was nervous to go into the woods. >> they're looking for somebody in camo. we're wearing camo because it's hunting season. that's a scary thing to be mistaken, and everybody's looking at you and everybody's

on edge. and rightfully so. >> monroe and pike counties have been on high alert for weeks as the hunt for frien continues. in delaware county, the family of a man killed in a fire bombing is looking for answers, especially since he was targeted twice before. anthony gorman died yesterday morning in the fire at his home in baldwin street on chester. fire investigators are calling it suspicious. officials told nbc 10 his home was fire bombed twice in the past. we talked with his daughter leticia cunningham. >> the fact that we lost our father this way. i feel like because it happened before and he reported it, that something more should have happened. >> we reached out to police. they said they're investigating the fire bombing as a possible retaliation involving an outlaw motorcycle gang. gorman's family told us he was a member of a motorcycle club, but has been disabled since an accident in 2009. philadelphia police are

searching for the gunman who shot a man. the shooting happened yesterday afternoon. police say the 24-year-old victim was shot several times and is in stable condition. a call for an end to the virus in north philadelphia. city leaders, religious groups, and community members held this peace walk yesterday near the playground where a teen was shot and killed over the summer. the organizers say it will bring healing, hope, and health to the area. next, a plea from the parents of the latest persons threatened with beheading by isis militants. plus, artifacts lost. we now know what kind ofabout objects from 9/11 were destroyed in that fire at the flight 93 memorial. tens of thousands of demonstrators refuse to leave the streets of hong kong, but now they face a deadline. and robbers on the run. a pair of suspected thieves

this is nbc 10 news. welcome back. 5:41. 46 degrees here at nbc 10, as we take a live look from our camera atop the comcast center. it is a chilly sunday morning and it's not going to be getting that warm today. maybe not much higher than 60 degrees, if you have outdoor plans. but lots of sunshine, so it will be nice and bright outside, although a little bit cool. the parents of a u.s. aide worker threatened with beheading by isis militants are pleading for their son's release. >> most of all, know that we love you. and our hearts ache for you to be granted your freedom so we

can hug you again and set you free to continue the life you have chosen. the life of service to those in greatest need. >> peter cassidy was taken hostage in october of last year in syria where he was providing aid for refugees. the threat against cassidy comes after the beheading of a british aide worker shown in a video in friday. in virginia, the parents of a missing college sophomore are asking whoever is responsible for her disappearance to help them find her. hannah graham vanished on september 13th. she was attending the university of virginia in charlottesville. a man was arrested and charged with her abduction. police say there is evidence linking the suspect to the death of a virginia tech student in 2009. an update now on a fire at the flight 93 memorial in shanksville. the american flag that flew above the capitol on september 11 was destroyed. the headquarters building was

destroyed, but the museum that's under construction was not damaged. there's still no word on what caused that fire. the memorial is still open to visitors. in hong kong, tens of thousands of pro-democracy protesters held a defiant rally after the government told them to clear the streets. the rally remained peaceful through this morning. earlier in the weekend, tensions flared between the protesters and those who oppose them. police arrested 19 people following those clashes. officials say the protesters must be gone by tomorrow. the methodist church's highest court will decide later this month whether a central pennsylvania minister who officiated his gay son's wedding can keep his pastoral credentials. reverend frank shaffer is the former pastor of a church in lebanon. he was defrocked following the church trial last year, then reinstated by an appeals panel in june, but that decision was appealed to the judicial council, which is the church's highest court. the nine-member panel said it will hear oral arguments in the case on october 22nd in

this is nbc 10 news. >> some people may have trouble shedding pounds, even when their doctor tells them to lose weight. but one physician's patients are having success with his simple new program. here's the story. >> reporter: this is jean hillsman just two years ago.

overweight and struggling with a list of health problems. >> and i started developing high blood pressure. cholesterol issues. lack of energy. and just kind of became a little bit more sedentary than i really should have been doing. >> reporter: jean also developed an irregular heart beat that could lead to stroke. her physician had some other advice. >> he looked at me and he says, jean, you really ought to lose some weight. would you like to? i said, would i like to? i would love to. >> reporter: but instead of giving her a lecture on exercise and diet, dr. strauss did something a little different. >> and i wrote this prescription to her and i gave it to her. >> reporter: dr. stroauss says it's a new method, writing prescriptions for weight loss. >> the power of physically writing a prescription and giving it to a patient from a

doctor seems to carry more weight. >> reporter: each script has instructions on how many pounds a patient should lose and advice on how to do it. dr. strauss says since he started the prescription program two years ago, he's noticed that patients are more successful. he found about 60% of those who get prescriptions lose the weight as opposed to just 10% of those who only get verbal instructions. >> what the most amazing thing is when people realize that by taking that step for themselves of losing that weight, suddenly they become much more in control of so many elements of their health. >> the blood pressure went way down. off the medications. the cholesterol went way down. >> reporter: jean says dr. strauss's prescription gave her the structure she needed to lose the weight. 50 pounds altogether, and just in time for her 80th birthday. >> and when he gave me that prescription, it was symbolic of commitment. and that commitment is what i

this is nbc 10 news. >> 5:51. 46 degrees here at nbc 10, as we take a live look at the center city skyline from our camera, atop the adventure aquarium in camden, and feeling a lot like fall this sunday morning. you're going to need a light jacket if you head outside this morning. going to see lots of sunshine today, but temperatures are going to be staying on the cool side. maybe not getting much above 60 degrees. in georgia, police are looking for two suspects who tried to slow down an officer with some stolen chain saws. a police dash cam shows the suspects tossing those chain saws off their get-away van during a high speed chase. police say the two men stole them from a hardware store.

the officer driving the patrol car had to swerve to avoid a direct hit. a short time later, the van stopped and the suspects ran into some nearby woods. authorities at jfk airport in new york say a smoker caused a security breach. they say the man left a passenger waiting area to take a cigarette break after he went through security screening. they say he then tried to return through a gate which wasn't open. some flights were delayed while officials spoke with the man. he was not arrested. a $70 million investment in camden, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held last night for the new salvation army community center. the facility is in the kramer hill neighborhood and will house a food pantry, early childhood education center, and a health clinic among other amenities. turning now to wall street, and cnbc's tyler matheson with a preview of what's ahead this week in the world of business. >> look for a very busy week

ahead in the markets and for the economy. also this week, the first monday in october brings a new term for the justices of the supreme court. the nobel prize winners will be announced. the new nhl hockey season kicks off on wednesday. how about that? and on wall street, a new earnings season begins. look for just a handful of economic reports, though, this week. including a couple credit with the federal reserve telling us how much americans are borrowing these days. also, the labor department's latest jolts survey on job openings and turnover. that shows how many workers are actually quitting their jobs and moving on to get better ones. we'll also get minutes from the federal reserve's latest policy meeting so we can see what's on the minds of the nation's central bankers. oil prices -- you know, we've been watching them for a while. they've been declining lately, multi-year lows. with that in mind, the government will forecast how high or low home heating bills might be this winter. fortune magazine out with its list of the most powerful women in business. one new name expected this year.

nine miles per hour throughout the rest of our area. take a look at the poconos. only 34 degrees. we're at 38 in allentown. 37 in westchester. mid 40s at mount holly. 39 in atlantic city. 48 degrees in stone harbor. if you're waking up in wilmington, 41. 40 degree degrees in glassboro. we are down 21 degrees from this time yesterday. we are 24 degrees cooler in allentown. 28 degrees cooler in potstown. temperatures about 28 degrees cooler in millville. so we started warmer in the 60s, but now throughout our area, you can see all the cold air has really plunged to the south. it's even affecting the carolinas. 44 degrees currently in cincinnati. 40 degrees in buffalo. so this cool air is sitting right over the middle part of our country. as we head into the rest of today, you'll notice the cool air will retreat back to the north. mild air makes its return
